GARDNER: A FAMILY OF FISHERMEN FROM THE WARWICKSHIRE AVON and some related branches, by A Michael Dancer, 2015
My mother’s maternal grandmother Ruth Dolphin was born Ruth Gardner and this account is of her forebears in the male line. In the 18th and 19th centuries the Gardners were fishmongers and fished the river Avon at Bidford-on-Avon, Warwickshire, some 6 or 7 miles west and upstream of Stratford upon Avon. Ruth’s uncle George Gardner (1837-87) emigrated in unusual circumstances to the USA where his descendants live at the present day.
