SHELLARD: A FAMILY OF CANAL BOAT BUILDERS FROM THE BIRMINGHAM AREA and some related branches, by A Michael Dancer, 2017
My paternal grandmother’s mother was Mary Catherine Jones nee Shellard (1859-1927) and this is an account of her ancestry from eighteenth century Monmouth. It is postulated that the family’s origins lie in the border between Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. From Monmouth the family moved at the turn of the century to Gayton in Northamptonshire and thence in the nineteenth century to Oldbury on the west north western outskirts of Birmingham. The family were principally engaged in the manufacture of canal boats.
